[1 Excerpt from Ms Manzano’s file, from The Grass is Greener’s archives: After falling nearly one-million fids into debt earning a PhD in the archaic computer languages needed to keep the U.S. government’s many out-of-date but too-expensive-to-replace computer systems up and running, she was two days from graduation when a brand-new AI system crashed into her chosen field like the Hindenburg and automated the entire process. But that was a dime-a-dozen sob story in the modern Corporate world, unworthy of The Grass is Greener’s greatest prize. In fact, her minimum-wage job carrying the bulky, out-of-date computers up six flights of stairs to manually plug them into the new quantum supercomputers was considered a success story in the Corporate Council’s annual employment statistics as being “within her field” and “union-protected”—specifically, the UAW, or United Android Workers union, which deemed stair-climbing to be unworthy of the wear-and-tear it caused to expensive robot joints and thus restricted to human laborers. Manzano had won the sympathy of the GiGalos and her one-way ticket to Paradise Mars when, live on the feed, she’d been collecting hard drives from the scrubbers that pulled lethal levels of arsenic, lead, and other metals out of the New York City drinking water for use in semiconductor manufacturing in New Jersey, only for a runaway goose to get sucked into the machine’s intake and shower her with feathers, blood, and foie gras. The destruction of the scrubbing machine having happened during her maintenance, she was promptly dismissed from the job with the cost of the equipment to come out of her future earnings, should she ever again have any. Only after a massive, spontaneous social media campaign by The Grass is Greener viewers were the terms of her dismissal amended to specify that she could keep what remained of the goose as compensation for her service.]
